Unique Upholstered Sofa Ostrea by Annika Goransson
Young Swedish designer Annika Göransson created this unique upholstered sofa called Ostrea. In designer’s words, “Ostrea is my modern version of the 19th century’s upholstery furniture. I was inspired by the bombastic divans and armchairs, which were richly decorated with tassels, fringes and drapes. I converted the ornamentation into structures and translated the bombastic shapes into a flowing, organic form. The oyster’s structure and colors also inspired me hence the name, which means oyster in Latin.
I have worked with the contrast between rough and smooth and light and dark in the furniture. The base of the sofa is sculptured out in dense Styrofoam. It’s covered partly with cold foam for comfort; the woolen fabrics are glued on and sewn together by hand. The orange thread accentuates the organic shape and defines the flexible part of the sofa.”
