A school with large urban platforms that encourage socialization among children
Copenhagen – the capital city and the political and cultural center of Denmark – is in continuous development, with a growing population equal to about 1,000 new residents per month. Thus, the Danish capital needs progressive construction and greater number of public buildings and most importantly – schools.
A new school building dedicated to the education and socialization of children in Copenhagen is the South Harbour School. The project was created by the architectural bureau JJW Architects, and this was also the winning solution to the World Architecture News Education Award 2016 . The inventive and complex architectural concept of the school is identified with the “open and free” character of the sea. Taking the sea as inspiration, the architects created an architectural structure that is open and free, accessible to every child and constructed with large urban platforms that encourage greater socialization. The concept of JJW Architects allows the school to connect with the urban environment and harmoniously coexist with it.
The project has clear goals – educative and social interaction between children and professional staff. South Harbour School is an educational institution that provides professional practices and courses, including culinary and music courses. Thus the interior of the school is organized in thematic areas and classrooms designed for the different needs of children and teachers. Some of the classrooms and spaces are characterized by open interior concept and function as public educational spaces that are open for everyone.
