It is manufactured out of a flat board of birch wood. The legs are the structure and the bending tool of the chairs base. The bending is possible thanks to the kerfing technique. Splurging may seem like the best way to go because it will provide encouragement to stay in your office, and now you can get your work done. There’s nothing wrong with splurging, especially when you think it would be quite productive. The worst thing would be to buy all that nice furniture and find out that it is not comfortable enough. Everyone who works in an office will have to agree that your office furniture is nothing more than a torture device unless it is ergonomic. Many big time corporations invest countless dollars in ergonomic office furniture to combat the larger amount of money they would spend in worker’s compensation claims and associated expenses. The lesson we can learn at home is to always buy ergonomic office furniture and just hope that the furniture doesn’t have to be as bland and boring as most office furniture tends to be. Ergonomic adjustable desks are great news to your neck and back. They come in colors other than gray, navy blue, and tan! The table can adjust as high or low as you wish, keeping your back [...]

The post Ergonomic Adjustable Desks appeared first on The Design Home.

It comes in a flat pack containing wooden pieces and pegs, metal part and rope with a tied knot. You can assemble the birdhouse in minutes and place on a tree or wall. From the designers, “This nestbox was designed with a purpose to provide the best living space for a small bird. After a very long research about the material to assure the most similar conditions to natural habitat, we found out, that a pure wood is the best solution. We not only used a pure wood to built DO IT_birdhouse, but also didn’t let to ruin the natural effect by eliminating chemicals which may have dangerous influence on a bird. Which means that a bird will have a breathable, insulated, water-resistant and fumeless living space. In case of a bird predator attack we included a special metal part around the nestbox “entrance”. While designing process we payed attention on a tree safety by exploring new hanging system using climbing rope. Our DO IT flat-pack contains climbing rope with a tied knot ready [...]

The post DIY Birdhouse by Marcin Pogorzelski appeared first on The Design Home.

The small apartment is located in the top floor of an old building of 1910 and was originally divided into five rooms. The renovation of the apartment involved the complete emptying of the interior and removing the false ceiling that covered the original structure of wooden beams and reorganising the space around a wooden cube located at the center of the home. The wooden cube is made of maple and has the three sides containing front of the kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, a small closet, toilets and a shower of 1.60 × 0.90. Other functional areas of the home such as dining, living, bedroom and kitchen areas are organised around the wooden box. The simple outdoor retreat is located at the end of a tiny mountain road leading up a coastal hill. Overlooking the ocean at the southernmost tip of the Izu Peninsula, about 180km south of Tokyo, the site is on a steep slope with stunning views and sounds of the sea. From the architects, “A young couple, both outdoor enthusiasts, asked for a simple retreat set in the outside that would give them and their children a stark contrast to their daily lives in downtown Tokyo. With most of the site sloped at 30 degrees and less than a tenth flat, the project started with carving out the mountain. Placing a small volume into the resultant trapezoidal carved-out void, and a larger one on top turns the mountain void into the centre of the house: a spa zone in the mountain between the platonic volumes housing bedrooms on the lower and living on the upper level. The volumes themselves defy their mass as they rotate around an inconspicuous pivot, the void of the spiral staircase that connects the cave with the sky. When the spaces in-between become [...]

The post A House in Kisami by Florian Busch Architects appeared first on The Design Home.

The prefabricated private house is built for a young couple and their two children. The house is composed of two parts – the lower part is transparent and connects with the surrounding garden and vegetation while the upper part offers privacy and individual freedom to the occupants. From the architects, “The building is separated into an upper and a lower part. The upper volume consists of rooms of various heights corresponding to their individual function. Bedrooms, bathrooms, the dressing room and the rooms for the children all require different heights and project into the lower living areas. This common space is organised by these staggered volumes without being interrupted by partitions. Walking around the house takes one through a variety of rooms on the upper levels, which are orientated to the garden as well as to the inner atrium. The walls and floors of the individual upper rooms are built of sustainable CNC-cut timber panels. These do a variety of things. They constitute the finish; define spaces and functions; help insulate the building; are recyclable; create a comfortable internal environment; [...]

The post Haus W by Kraus Schönberg Architects appeared first on The Design Home.

The chair was launched at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in April 2013. According to the designer, “Cradle utilises a custom-made cut pattern that allows a non-elastic textile to perform in a three dimensional way. This allows for the correct tension to comfortably support the body and both visually and physically reduces the product’s weight and cost. The chair comprises a metal frame supporting a non-elastic textile with a geometric cut pattern, which cradles an upholstered seat block. The “Green box” is situated on the slopes of the Raethian Alps. The structure is realised with lightweight metal galvanized profiles and steel wires while retaining the rustic stone walls and columns of the old building. The structure with steel wires provides tridimensional support for the climbing vegetation. Interior of the Green box garden pavilion is divided into multiple areas, a room for gardening tools, a cooking area and a space for entertaining family, friends and guests.
