Woolamai House by Kerstin Thompson Architects

Australian practice Kerstin Thompson Architects have designed a calm rural retreat in Woolamai, Victoria. The prosaic hayshed look of the building takes cues from agricultural buildings in the surrounding farmland.

The house contains two bedrooms: one main bedroom and one for the guests and children. The remaining interior space is living room with dramatic views to the north and west. The change in ceiling height shifts the feel of the interior space from domestic and intimate to agrarian and expansive.

The exterior skin of the building is corrugated sheet. A major portions of this is perforated to provide sun shade and the opportunity for cross flow ventilation while keeping the flies out. A breezeway verandah on the northern side supplements the living room and also doubles as a sleep-out for hot Australian nights.
