Architect Taichi Mitsuya recently created a family home with an area of only 81 square meters that makes a mix of the interior with the exterior. With many creative solutions and building in height instead of width, Mitsuya designed a house with a simple but contemporary appearance, which offers enough space for a family of four and enough room for socializing and entertainment.
Due to the small area of land, most of the parcel is covered by the construction. Because of this approach there is no room for yard or garden, so the front of the house is made of glass, offering spaciousness and informally becomes the yard of the house.
In order to connect the interior with the urban exterior, the architect designed a large 9-meter high room divided into four functional layers. The upper part of this open space is made of glass that lets the sunlight penetrate in all levels.
One of the walls of the lower level has been replaced with massive doors. When the doors are fully open to the street, the living room turns into a porch. The bathroom, kitchen and dining room are on the same level, but hidden from the public eye.
The main facade is made of wooden panels in the lower level and glass in the upper level, while the sides are covered with aluminum. The barrier between private, public and semiprivate areas is mitigated by the distribution of light and the use of the materials.
