Writer’s Studio 1

New York-based architectural firm Cooper Joseph Studio has designed the Writer’s Studio, a one-room personal retreat in Ghent, New York. Following is some information from the architects, “Imagine the perfect place to work. This studio is as idiosyncratic as the specificity of our clients needs, but it is all channeled through a design aesthetic that calls for a purely sculptural composition, and perfect detailing that conceals all methods of construction behind elegant materials and surfaces. Although the structure is essentially a simple rectangular box, open, cantilevered glass corners and the highly nuanced position of windows gives an expansive feeling of being in the woods.

The interior uses a reduced palette with walnut in varied forms and finishes and local black slate. Abstract in its elements, a rain shower next to the full height of frameless glass is just like being outside. The sink is custom designed with a slatted surface bringing water to a recessed drain, so no piping is visible. The fireplace is both the heart and the visual center, anchoring the asymmetrical composition. For a desk and table we used folded triangular planes that play against the orthogonal nature of the architecture.”
