Tokyo office renovated with 130 shipping pallets

Architectural Studio “Hiroki Tominaga Atelier” offered an economical solution for designing temporary office space. Instead of using expensive furniture for the conference room, architects used 130 wooden pallets. They created large desks, bookcases, ceiling, floor or in other words everything necessary for an office.

The 50-square meters office is used by a video production company. Due to the indefinite time period of usage of the office they demanded economical solution concept for the interior design which will be inexpensive, but functional. Instead of using expensive furniture, the Japanese architects proposed to buy wooden pallets for the interior design.

Three different sizes of pallets were used, ranging in costs of USD $10 to $30. The cheaper models were used for the ceiling, while the most expensive pallets were used for the floor which is in the form of a chess board. Additionally, the pallets have been used for part of the facade in the form of blinds that discreetly conceal the interior of the offices, which are located on the ground floor of the building.

The total cost of the project, including furniture and fixtures, was only $2,300, and the client can pack it up and take it with them if they wish to move.
